VICTORY: Russia Announces Lake Baikal to Be Spared Oil Pipeline Threat

lake_baikal.jpgIn yet another startling victory for Ecological Internet's network and partners, Russian President Putin has announced the new Siberian/Pacific coast oil pipeline will be routed at least 40 km from Lake Baikal [more], and outside of the "Jewel of Siberia's" watershed. Lake Baikal is home to 20 percent of the world's fresh water, and is the world's deepest and oldest lake renowned for its water purity and home to tremendous amounts of endemic species including a rare fresh water seal.

Ecological Internet is proud to have generated tens of thousands of strategically targeted protest emails that have successfully supported the local Russian environmental movement and the likes of Greenpeace and WWF in their protests against routing a major oil pipeline adjacent to a fifth of the world's freshwater.

It is clear that Ecological Internet has fully reached its stride, as this is the fourth major environmental conservation victory that we have achieved in the past month, and the second in two days! Over the past year Ecological Internet has entirely renovated our technology, organizational structure, web site design and improved our protest methodology. Ecological Internet now has in place and offers for free to the world the Earth's preeminent biocentric ecological activism knowledge base and action center.

Shortly we will be launching our mid-year fund-raiser to build upon this fully established and highly successful knowledge and action infrastructure, by adding staff and resources to further improve the quality and quantity of our offerings. By participating in the network and supporting Ecological Internet financially you help bring hope to the Earth and her humanity. More on this later.

Congratulations earth!

I would like to make a general comment about the email protest format. I would like to know what you think about the pre-filled info in the email. That is, when I went to respond to the action alert, up popped an email form all filled out with subject and text. Of course, the note there says to edit and personalize the message, and I did that. However, if just 25% of people click send, and another 25% do very minor editing, are we not putting the thoughtful messages at risk of being discarded? If the recipient receives 100 beautifully articulate and unique messages, isn't that more effective than 5,000 "rubber stamped" ones? Could we filter these out? Thoughts? Comments?
Thanks much. I am very happy about the recent victories. Keep up the good work all!

That's good news!! You are really moving.

Yeah, great , we contributed to the decision of mr Potthead of Russia.
But the thing is that this kind of pipe lines have to do with our (yes OUR!) energy consumption.
We are so accustommed to water from the wall, electricity at a press of the knob, push the gaspedal and you fly over the road.
But they are addictions.
Some of them necessary.
We live like it/with it and the rest of the world also wants to be enchanted by it.We/You already know what will be the price: total impoverished biodiversity and a changed climate.
But I am glad the Russian premier bent for some pressure.

Yet again congratulations Glen.

I am especially pleased about this news as I have been in touch with a Russian lady on the Environment Forum. The Russian protestors were so
concerned as they do not get press publicity about things like this.

That's a landmark success for you and all those who support your organization !

Dear Glen,

I guess you're thinking that it's too early to congratulate Pres Putin et al.; otherwise you'd have set that in motion? Sounds brilliant, though, on the face of it, but the Reuter's report does suggest that a cynical explanation is yet possible.

All the best,

Michael Sackin

Congratulations, we made it!
Now I only wish you'd take this policy as routine: after every victory please supply a simple form to thank the decision-maker for a good decision - this will reward this person, perhaps give some positive publicity to all involved and help people who are not protesters to overcome shyness to join in campaigns and it even might facilitate negotiations in the future. A simple line of appreciation and the address is all you need to provide in an action alert to thank the leaders we've influenced. This also would show that we think we are the ones that give leaders their tasks. That is: democratic representation in a nut-shell.

A comment to Rocio's comment - I think the e-mails are convenient to show how MANY people care and pay attention. The thoughtful and very individual letters I would think should better be sent by ordinary mail, letter that in many countries are stored in archives and are open to journalists and researchers. So please provide help to easily choose between these two options - they would work harmoniously together in my opinion!
Thanks for a VERY good campaign! All the best!

REPLY:
Doris,
Doing a thank you campaign is simply a matter of having enough time and resources. I am stretched very thin working 100 hour weeks and simply do not have time to do it in this case. I very much appreciate your suggestions and we are working to get there.
Warm regards,
Dr. Glen Barry

Will it really help or just postpone all negative consequenses? Will it be like slow poisoning?

Cheers,

Marina

What a great use of technology; thanks for applying your skills to shared betterment!

Dear Friends,

Thank you for providing the channels. However, I favour the shorter, more individual messages, once I have enough information to be across the basic facts. and angles.
