Water Crisis
The Earth is being buffetted by a variety of environmental catastrophes. As humanity slumbers largely thinking things are fine it is difficult to identify which major eco-crisis will be the first to cause widespread death and destruction, probably the only way average Joe's are going to stop and think about where their water, air and food come from. I would say there is a 50/50 chance that the water crisis will be the first to truly bite (the other of course being climate change). Water is the lubricant of life and we continue to over use it and crap into it wherever found. The media is reporting on a new WWF report on the water crisis.
"Supporting large-scale industry and growing populations using water at high rates has come close to exhausting the water supplies of some First World cities and is a looming threat for many, if not most, others," the report warned...
The report proposed seven ways to tackle the problem: conserving catchments and wetlands; balancing conservation and consumption; changing attitudes to water; repairing ageing infrastructure; increase charges to farmers for water use; reduce water contamination; and more study of water systems.

Sirs
The problem of making Average Joe aware of the gravity of the situation is rendered more complex by the fact that Average Scientist does not know where from the water is coming, what it's genesis and in clear is completely clueless regarding the Real History of the Earth.
Indeed what he does at all time is spout forth what he has been brainwashed about during his Universiity (ies)years and repeat parrot-fashion what his mind Masters have presented to him as Truth.
The terrible reality is that water is abiotic in its origin, and further the global warming results have irreversible consequences of which the worse are firstly the accelerated drift of the Earth on the Eccliptic and hence the acceleration of cyclone & tornadoes due to the increased De Coriolis forces and secondly the lower pressure of pure water in its raising or static aquifers with the terrible observed but not understood consequence of the invasion of the sea under the continents.
Average Joe has probably throw the sponge in despair and considers indeed the situation hopeless ! The derelic state of that alleged science (discipline )masquerading as Geology the world over is certainly for something in the most passive state of many confronted with the rage of elements. They have, and righly so, lost confidence.
Yours faithfully
