Global climate change may be driving the factors behind the partial closure
of one of Canada's Arctic parks, says Parks Canada.
Much of Auyuittuq National Park on Baffin Island was cut off to visitors this
week after flash flooding in the region.
Parks officials continue to worry that erosion linked to warming weather may
erode the walls of earth forming some of the park's lakes. That could flood
large portions of the park.
The park and surrounding communities have been dealing with record high
temperatures, Parks Canada spokesperson Pauline Scott told CTV.ca on Friday.
"We're quite concerned," she said. "This is a very dynamic park. There have been
melting glaciers for the last three years ... but we've never seen anything like
this in the 40 years the park has been in existence."
